When Tad Williams revealed the cover for the second book in his trilogy The Last King of Osten Ard, EMPIRE OF GRASS became an instant fan favorite.   The design required that Michael leave the left empty for text on the back cover, but he decided to revisit the painting and add a few finishing touches to the stairs. We’re pleased to offer this much anticipated print in two sizes.  The larger is printed at the same size as the original painting.

“If it's ka it'll come like a wind, and your plans will stand before it no more than a barn before a cyclone” Originally an interior illustration from THE DARK TOWER (Book 7) by Stephen King.  Over the years, Michael's stylized symbol for "Ka" has taken on a life of its own as it spread across the internet.   Michael recently revisited the image.  We are offering it exclusively here as a companion to the wildly popular print GUNSLINGER: CHAPTER ONE.

Almost 30 years ago, DAW Books contacted Michael about illustrating the cover for a high fantasy novel by Tad Williams. Their amazing relationship began with The Dragonbone Chair, and Tad's work continued to inspire many epic covers from GREEN ANGEL TOWER through the OTHERLAND series. This darkly beautiful painting for THE WITCHWOOD CROWN signals the return to Osten Ard for Whelan and Williams. DAW preferred a more mysterious approach this time, without the main characters—it's the red menace in the windows of the Tower of Hjeldin that takes center stage.
